Mentorship Matters: A Professional Organization’s Experience With a Volunteer Mentor Program

Mentorship is widely recognized as essential to nursing professional development, yet structured, cross-organizational programs for nurse leaders remain uncommon. This article describes the Minnesota Organization of Leaders in Nursing Mentorship Program, a statewide, volunteer driven initiative now in its tenth year that has connected 320 nurse leaders across 168 mentor mentee pairs. Survey data from 80 mentees show 91% reported satisfaction with their mentoring experience. Three strengths account for sustained success: intentional matching grounded in Benner's Novice to Expert framework, a structured yet flexible infrastructure, and continuous quality improvement via the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. Minnesota Organization of Leaders in Nursing’s model offers a replicable framework for professional nursing associations nationally.
